Family structure in Ethiopia is typically the extended family and the family ties are strong.Families in the Ethiopian community include from one to six persons.In times of crisis,the family will take full responsibility for the family member's problems, whether it is financial, health or social.Disputes are settled by elders of the community. The society respects elders and accepts their admonitions or advice. Interaction is personal, informal and intimate; a great deal of interdependence is needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem.

The basic unit of Philippine society are nuclear families average six to eight members in size.In a traditional Filipino family, the father is considered the head of the family while the mother takes responsibility of the emotional growth and values formation of the children but they are both close with their children.Because of this remarkable closeness, parents sometimes have difficulties letting go of their children and thus results to having them stay for as long as they want.This somehow explains why grandparents are commonly seen living with their children in the Philippines. Unlike the way people grow old in the west where they are provided with outside homes and care giving,Filipino elderly enjoy their remaining lives inside their houses with their children and grandchildren looking after them.However,the need for economic survival and the stress of acculturation have compelled many parents to remove their teenagers' from the home and draw on the family support system in the Philippines.
